Ten women died Tuesday morning in a fire that broke around 3:30am (06:30 GMT) in a retirement home in Chiguayante, in the south of Chile.

The Santa Marta Home hosted 42 people.

Due to the state in which the bodies were found, the victims will be identified via DNA testing.

Governor Jorge Ulloa promised that relatives will receive the information they need.

He also said that the causes of the fire are still unknown.

One person suffered a first-degree burn in one of their legs and was taken to hospital. It was confirmed that three other residents were able to escape the fire.
