Ten women died this Tuesday morning in a fire that broke around 3:30am (06:30 GMT) in a retirement home in Chiguayante, Bío Bío region, Chile.

The facility, called Santa Marta, hosted a total of 42 people. Due to the state in which the bodies were found, the victims -found during the debris removal process- will be identified via DNA testing.

Flames ripped through the so-called second dormitory of this building located at Bernardo O’Higgins avenue, approximately 25 minutes to the south of the regional capital, Concepci√≥n.

The head of the Regional Government and former member of the Lower House of Congress, Jorge Ulloa, assured that relatives will receive the information they need. He also admitted that the causes of the fire are still unknown.

One person suffered a first-degree burn in one of their legs and was taken to hospital. It was confirmed that three other residents were able to escape the blaze.

The emergency was eventually controlled by Fire Department volunteers and the Uniformed Armed Police. Ambulance Services and the city major, Antonio Rivas, also attended.
