SANTIAGO, CHILE – The Public Health Institute has recently allowed this emergency contraception sale in pharmacies deprived of any prescription.

The rule came through a resolution in which they have permitted the change of the Levonorgestrel active principle´s modality commercialization. Well known as morning after pill.

According to the document, the non- prescription authorization, due to it 10 years of use in the country. Period in which the pill did not showed negative effects for public´s health.

The agreement will permit the Minister of Health to change the regulations in order to provide the “go- ahead” instruction of the non- prescription capsule sale. It is expected that the rule could be working before the end of the year.

The active principle, the levonorgestrel, is available in two presentations, in 0, 75 mg and 1, 5 mg pills. The purpose of this emergency contraception is to prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse. But, it must be taken up to 3 days after the unprotected sex.
