32 people were arrested Thursday at a birthday party that violated curfew and exceeded indoor capacity limitations set by Chilean authorities in Lo Barnechea, a wealthy area of East Santiago, the country’s capital.

Only three people will face charges: the homeowner and two women who, once again, were caught “endangering public health”.

The other 29 were set free and subpoenaed, the Public Prosecutor’s Office confirmed.

Videos show that some attendees even hid under beds to avoid the police officers who showed up after neighbours complained about the noise coming from the house.

This is not the first time privileged Chileans make news with irresponsible behaviour in the pandemic.

In January, young people sparked outrage with a massive illegal party in Cachagua, a well-heeled coastal town known as a Summer or weekend retreat for celebrities, politicians and businesspeople.

In January as well, the Government confirmed that, “a few months ago”, a cat’s birthday party caused a covid-19 outbreak in Santo Domingo, a small seaside city that also serves as an escape for wealthy Chileans, primarily from Santiago.

In late January, Grammy-nominated singer Camila Gallardo was arrested while hosting an illegal party in her flat at the W Hotel in Las Condes, a rich area of the capital.
