The UN asked Chile, through a statement, the creation of an independent entity to monitor detention centers and that way prevent tortures and mistreatments against incarcerated people.

The commission of UN’s subcommittee of Torture prevention visited 22 Chilean prisons during last week, and among its conclusions expressed its concern for the absence of an organism capable of watching over the treatments given to prisoners.

“Having an organism capable to carry out this job nationwide is the first vital step to prevent torture and mistreatment”, assured Lorena González Pinto, who leads the delegation.
