The 2017 presidential election failed to produce a winner with over 50% of preferences.

Thus, Chile will have to vote, yet again, for either former president Sebastian Piñera or former news anchor Alejandro Guillier on 17 December.

With over 78% of polling stations counted, Mr Piñera could become a candidate to the presidency with 36,67% of preferences and Mr Guillier with 22,63%.

Radio Bio Bio projected, before official results by the Electoral Service were announced, that Mr Piñera would get, in the end, 36,7% and Mr Guillier 23,2%.

The first round was expected to be a resounding success for the billionaire and former head of State, as many expected his numbers to surpass the 40% mark.
