Experts call to reinforce preventive actions against the Zika Virus in Chile, after American scientists confirmed the relation between the illness and microcephaly in newborns, besides other serious fetal brain defects.

The study will be published at the New England Journal of Medicine, one of the most prestigious magazines in the world.

The Panamerican Health Organization (PAO), stated that the study “Improves significantly our comprehension of the causal link between Zika virus and the fetal malformations that have been observed”.

The undersecretary of Public Health in Chile, Jaime Burrows, assured that the protocol of action is still in force. However, the recommendation of the experts is to reinforce the prevention from now on. The advice was also supported by the Panamerican Health Organization and José Manuel Manríquez, epidemiologist of the University of Chile.
