La revista estadounidense GQ (con contenido para hombres que se enfoca en la moda, el estilo y la cultura masculina, con artículos sobre comida, cine, salud, sexo, música, viajes, deportes, tecnología y literatura) eligió a la tenista Serena Williams como la mujer del año 2018. La número 16 del ranking de la WTA ha conseguido todo en la arcilla y su influencia va más allá del ámbito deportivo.
Sin embargo, el reconocimiento estuvo marcado por una particularidad de mal gusto que ha generado una ola de comentarios.
La revista publicó cuatro portadas: tres para hombres (Michael B. Jordan, Henry Golding y Jonah Hill) y una para Serena.
Hasta ahí todo bien, pero en el caso de la tenista escribieron la palabra mujer entre comillas.

En redes sociales, Mick Rouse, quien según su biografía de Twitter es un gerente de investigación de GQ, señaló que la palabra fue escrita a mano por el diseñador de modas estadounidense Virgil Abloh.
Abloh diseñó el vestido de tutú del US Open de Williams y habitualmente usa comillas en sus diseños.
Aún así la explicación no logró convencer a los seguidores de la tenista, quienes criticaron con todo esta nueva edición.

I can’t believe no one at GQ thought perhaps with misogynistic and violent trans insults that Serena (and Venus) have dealt with for the last almost 20 years, to not put woman in quotation marks.
