Nueva Delhi, la capital de India, amaneció este domingo bajo una densa nube de contaminación que obligó a desviar numerosos vuelos hacia aeropuertos vecinos.

La ciudad de 20 millones de habitantes vive cada año episodios de intensa contaminación provocados por los automóviles, la industria y el sector agrícola de las regiones cercanas.

La concentración de partículas finas PM2,5 alcanzó máximos a causa de las lluvias del sábado por la noche, indicó la agencia india de supervisión de la calidad del aire (Safar).

La embajada estadounidense en Nueva Delhi registró por su parte el domingo por la mañana una concentración de partículas finas PM2,5 de 810 microgramos por metro cúbico de aire.

La Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS) recomienda no superar los 25 microgramos de media diarios.

“La contaminación alcanzó niveles insoportables”, se lamentó este domingo en Twitter el ministro principal de Nueva Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal.

Muchos habitantes se quejan de problemas en la garganta y los ojos e intentan protegerse con máscaras.

A causa de la mala visibilidad, las compañías Air India y Vistara anunciaron retrasos en los aeropuertos de la capital y varios vuelos fueron desviados a ciudades vecinas.

En 2017 la contaminación del aire provocó 1,2 millones de muertes premautras en India, según una estimación del año pasado publicada en la revista científica The Lancet.
