The Aedes Aegypti mosquito, vector of Dengue and Zika viruses, was found at the urban area of Arica, in northern Chile. The information was ratified by Health Minister, Carmen Castillo, after holding a special meeting to set the preventive plan.

According to Castillo, the mosquito would have entered to the country through a cryogenic vehicle. The information will be confirmed after an investigation ordered by the ministry.

” This is not an accidental find, it is the result of an active search, so, we are gaining time against possible risk situations we should take care of”, the authority assured.

Regarding to the precautionary measures to control the presence of the mosquito, the minister pointed out that some prevention tips are: Turn over empty pails and buckets, so that they do not collect excess water, always cover your trash can when not in use, and take care of the housing surroundings, hygienically speaking.

The most common symptoms of Zika are fever, rash, joint pain, or conjunctivitis. Other common symptoms include muscle pain and headache. The incubation period (the time from exposure to symptoms) for Zika virus disease is not known, but is likely to be a few days to a week.
