The Fishing National Service (Sernapesca) has published a statement in relation to the situation of Gerardo Díaz, a fisher who is walking from Chiloé to La Moneda, in Santiago, to protest due to a fine of $19 million pesos against him, and clarified that “Chile does not have exclusive areas for industrial fishing”.

At first was informed that the infraction against Díaz, was because of fishing on exclusive areas for industrials, version that was discarded by Sernapesca, and it was stated that he was fined because of the fishing of “reinetas”, with no permission.

The statement has also revealed that Díaz began a judicial process to not pay the fine, process that is under examination by the Court of Appeals from Talca, which will decide if Díaz should pay the fine or not.
