The General Comptrollership of the Republic, determinated that the Regional Government of The Araucanía could define the mapudungún as the official language of the zone.

The initiative was headed by the ex intendant of the ninth region, Francisco Huenchumilla, who submitted the official query before the organism.

The entity’s verdict, pointed out that the pretension of the Administration for giving the same handling to Spanish and mapudungun is reasonable. Even more if the 19.253 law considers the acknowledgement, respect and protection of the cultures and native languages through the use and conservation of these languages, together with Spanish, at the zones of high natives density.

Miguel Mellado, president of the Regional Council of The Araucanía, claimed that they are going to request an agreement in order to dictate a regulation to recognize the mapudungún as the official language.
