The El Tatio geysers Park is located at almost 90 km far from the town of San Pedro de Atacama and it sits at an altitude of 4,200 meters. It is the third largest in the world, after the Yellowstone Park (US) and Dolina Geiserov (Russia).
This geothermal field attracts hundreds of visitors per year. The area is also home to a number of hot springs, mud pots and fumaroles, the view is simply incredible.
In El Tatio, you’ll find pools with waters at comfortable temperatures but you can also come up against temperatures over the 100 ° Celsius. Thus, if you are not going to follow a self- security protocol you can put your life under a serious risk.
Regarding to this, last week, specifically on Friday we have known a tragic incident, according to La Tercera, a 69-year-old woman, was involved in a terrible accident in El Tatio. The Belgian woman, fell into one of the boiling geysers, apparently after trying to take a picture. She resulted with almost the 75% of her body burned, and also her husband resulted with deep injuries on his arms after his efforts to save his wife´s life.
The couple was immediately carried to the Calama´s Hospital, and due to the seriousness of the woman health condition, was transferred to Santiago, for being treated for life-threatening injuries. She´s still on vital risk.
